When to plant
Plant Polianthes bulbs in late spring, once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost is past. This timing gives the bulbs enough growing season to develop strong stalks and blooms.
Where to plant
Choose a site with full sun to ensure robust flowering and fragrance. Polianthes perform best in a location where their scent can carry into evening spaces. The soil must be well-draining — standing moisture can lead to bulb rot.
Preparing the soil
Loosen soil to a depth of about 20–25 cm, removing rocks, debris, and compact clods. Enrich with compost or organic matter to boost fertility. If using dense soil, mix in grit or coarse sand to improve drainage.
Planting the bulbs
Place each bulb pointed upward, and plant them about 5–8 cm deep. Space bulbs roughly 15 cm apart to allow air circulation and healthy growth. In containers, ensure a deep pot and good drainage.
After planting
Water gently but thoroughly to settle the soil. Maintain moderate moisture — water when the topsoil begins to dry, avoiding soggy conditions.
During growth & blooming
As stems and foliage emerge, feed with a balanced fertilizer to support bloom production. Flowering spikes will rise and open sequentially, releasing fragrance in the evening. Remove spent flower stalks to keep the display clean and to concentrate energy back into the bulbs.
After blooming / end of season
Allow the foliage to die back naturally — this period is key for recharging bulb energy. In colder climates, lift the bulbs after foliage withers, clean and dry them, and store in a frost-free, ventilated location. In warm zones, bulbs may remain in the ground with mulch protection.
Extra tips
Polianthes is ideal for planting near patios, pathways, or windows where its fragrance can be enjoyed. Combine with evening‑blooming or night‑scented plants for a scented garden theme. In containers, rotate pots so plants receive even light. Avoid heavy fertilization that might favor foliage over flowers. Over time, divided bulbs can help maintain vigor and strong floral displays.
